The main electricity and gas company in France is EDF (Electricité de France).

Once you're in your apartment, you need to contact them to open an electricity or gas account, otherwise the electricity will be cut off in your home within a few weeks. The standard lead time for a connection is 5 working days.

The procedure is fairly straightforward: just visit the EDF website. You can then decide whether to send them an e-mail or take out an energy contract directly.
